5 Ways to Improve Your Job Search Time Management Skills

best time management skills
Your resume is polished, and your list of references is updated. Now it’s time to embark on the job search.

There are lots of different ways you can go about looking for a job. One example is that you can supplement your own independent job search with the help of a staffing agency. Registering with an employment agency is easy. And the best part? Their services are free for job seekers. That’s right – you get expert help at zero cost to you (sounds like a no brainer!)

For those of you who are managing at least a portion of your job search on your own, check out these 5 helpful tips for improving your job search time management skills.

Prioritize

When you’re in the midst of a job search, it’s important to prioritize on a few different fronts.

First, identify your long-term goals for landing that dream job, then decide which goal is the most important and focus on that goal first.

Create a to-do list to help prioritize your daily tasks. Identify 2-3 things you have to get done each day – like returning emails from a prospective employer, making phone calls or searching the daily job postings.

When it comes to your to-do list, it’s sometimes best to make the tougher task a priority. You’ll feel great checking it off the list and it will help motivate you to take on the simpler tasks.

Avoid Distractions

Nothing sucks more time away from a productive job search like distractions do. And they’re everywhere – so avoid them at all costs. Some suggestions:

  • Turn off the tech and social media – TV, phone, text, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
  • Separate yourself from family and friends – do your work someplace where you can’t be bothered by side conversation.
  • Invest in a good set of earphones so you can cancel out noise and other distractions.
  • Block out time in your calendar to focus on the job search and nothing else.

Take Your Time

It’s true – taking your time is a valuable time management skill.

Rushing the job search process can easily happen, especially if you’re unemployed and feel added pressure to get a job and a paycheck fast. But if you over-focus on your search, you can burn out or end up making a bad job choice.

Remember to slow things down and take a break. Don’t try to do everything at one time. Pace yourself and find time to do things outside of your job search. It’ll help you recharge and stay strong.

Say No

Some of the job opportunities you pursue won’t be worth following through with for one reason or another. Submitting a job application or resume doesn’t commit you to an interview if it doesn’t seem like a good fit after your initial interactions. So it’s OK to say no.

Make a commitment to declining opportunities that just don’t feel right. This will free up your time and your mind for more important tasks and more promising job leads.

Stay Positive

Staying positive can help you manage your job search more efficiently and effectively. Keep a ‘can do’ mindset – and if you’re ever feeling frustrated, find a friend who can give you a pep talk and help keep your spirits up.

You can also stay positive and rid yourself of negative energy by taking in some yoga, going for a walk or hike, or listening to music.

Another great way to stay motivated and positive throughout your job search is to create a vision board. Find magazine clippings, photos and quotes that reflect your vision for that perfect job or where you see yourself in the next 5-10 years.
