Properly preparing work references involves more than just gathering a contact list of former supervisors. By being thorough and proactive, you can increase the likelihood that your references will respond favorably when a potential employer calls for a reference check.
We all know that a strong recommendation from a former employer can make or break your chances of landing an offer. So don’t let this important step fall through the cracks! Use these tips from A.R. Mazzotta to ensure glowing recommendations from references – and to get the job you want:
- Always get permission. Before providing the name of a reference, get the individual’s permission. When you schedule an interview, remind your contact that he’s on your reference list and may get a call. Be sure that he is willing to answer questions about you in a timely, positive and honest manner.
- Find out what he’s likely to say. Ask your reference what he would say about you to a recruiter – particularly, your strengths, weaknesses, reliability and status of rehire eligibility (i.e., would he hire you again?). If a reference seems reluctant to provide feedback, take him off your list.
- Remind your reference about your strengths and accomplishments. As time passes, your former employer may forget the great things you did while working for him. So before your interview, email him a list of the qualities and abilities you want the interviewer to know about you. Include your dates of employment, title and primary responsibilities, as well as your biggest accomplishments while on the job. Remember, it’s okay to encourage your reference to talk up your strengths – his input can make all the difference in whether or not you get your dream job!
- Give a “heads-up” before an employer calls. When the time comes, alert your reference to let him know when he’ll likely get a call. Remind him how important the opportunity is to you and how much you appreciate his help.
- Keep in touch regularly. While you’re on the job hunt, periodically touch base with your reference to let him know how your search is progressing.
