ASA Kicks off New Partnership Program to Help Protect Temp Workers

Safety Standard of Excellence The American Staffing Association (ASA) announced last week they have joined forces with the National Safety Council (NSC) to introduce a new workplace safety program for temporary workers.

The purpose of the Safety Standard of Excellence program is to help reduce the frequency and severity of temp work injuries, illnesses and fatalities by promoting best practices and ongoing improvement when it comes to safety in the workplace.

The purpose of the Safety Standard of Excellence program is to help reduce the frequency and severity of temp work injuries, illnesses and fatalities by promoting best practices and ongoing improvement when it comes to safety in the workplace.

When temporary workers are hired under the joint employment of a staffing agency and a host employer, both the agency and employer can be held responsible should any type of workplace injury occur. For this reason, the Safety Standard of Excellence program reinforces the importance of best safety practices for both parties, and gives staffing agencies the training resources and tools they need to adopt best practices, continually improve their safety efforts, and collaborate with the employers that use their temporary staffing services.

Additional information about the new Safety Standard of Excellence initiative can be found here.

On the tails of this announcement, ASA and NSC published a new case study focusing on temp worker safety. The case study shares some important reminders for both staffing agencies and employers about ensuring temporary worker safety:

  • In a temporary staffing situation, the staffing agency and host employer should determine which party controls workplace activities, conditions and hazards and is in the best position to provide the necessary safety and health protections. A written agreement that outlines both parties’ responsibilities is a must.
  • Both parties need to put procedures in place that ensure their safety obligations are met.
  • If a temp worker is injured on the job, the party that first learns of the injury must notify the other party. If serious injury that requires hospitalization occurs, OSHA must immediately be notified.
